CAMPBELL NAMED BIG SKY COACH OF THE YEAR

5/7/2004

OGDEN, Utah — Bill Campbell, Sacramento State’s head women’s tennis coach, was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year, it was announced today. The award is the third for Campbell in as many seasons.

This past year, Campbell led Sacramento State to a 23-3 overall record and its third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Hornets are currently ranked 35th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll and face 16th-ranked Fresno State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, May 15, at 9 a.m. Sacramento State was undefeated against league opponents this year, including a pair of 4-0 victories in the Big Sky Conference Tournament. In fact, in the tournament, Sacramento State won 72 of 77 singles games and did not lose a set.

Individually, four Hornets were named first team all-Big Sky. That quartet is highlighted by sophomore Margarita Karnaukhova who earned her second-straight Big Sky Most Valuable Player Award earlier this week. Karnaukhova (42nd) and freshman Anna Erikson (43rd) are currently ranked among the top 50 players in Div. I and both earned invitations to the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Tournament. Junior Roberta Fessenko is also ranked 117th.

A graduate of Sacramento State, Campbell took over the Hornet program in 1999. After going 1-15 and 5-15 in his first two years, he has since produced four winning seasons and a 70-25 record during that span. He becomes just the third coach in Big Sky history to win the award in three-consecutive years joining Weber State’s Keith Cox (1989-91) and Northern Arizona’s Mark Tichenor (1997-99).

Montana State head coach Mike Phillips was named the Big Sky Conference Men’ Tennis Coach of the Year.
