SACRAMENTO, Calif.- The Sacramento State men’s tennis team defeated Idaho State, 6-1, Saturday morning at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts. With the win, the Hornets clinch the number two seed and a first round bye at next week’s Big Sky Conference Championships. Sacramento State improves to 12-9 overall, 4-2 in the Big Sky while the Bengals fell to 11-7 overall, 4-2 in league play. Sacramento State, Idaho State and Northern Arizona each tied for second place with a 4-2 league record, however, the Hornets won the tiebreaker over both teams due to total points won in league competition.Sacramento State opened the day by taking two of the three doubles matches to claim the point. At the one, senior Nick Sheehan and junior Peter Farkas defeated Hestian Stoica and Ioannis Stavridis, 8-5. Junior Matt Jones and freshman Joakim Rydberg won their match over Ivan Moferdin and Jemre Okoh, 8-4, at the two. Freshmen Warwick Foy and Assad Malik fell to the Bengal duo of Marc Pijoan and Pablo Garces, 8-4, at the three.
In singles play, Jones snapped his two-match losing streak with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Stoica at the one. The Woodland Hills, Calif. native improved to 14-7 in singles competition. At the two, Rydberg defeated Stavridis, 6-1, 6-3. The Bastad, Sweden native has now won four-straight singles matches and now has eight singles victories on the year. Sheehan won his third straight match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Moferdin, at the three. At the four, Foy defeated Pijoan, 7-6, 6-3. At the five, Farkas defeated Masimba Ruwo, 6-0, 6-3, improving to 13-8 on the year. Freshman Will McAlister was the only Hornet to drop his singles match as he fell to Okoh, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6 singles.
Sacramento State will return to action in the Big Sky Semifinals on Saturday, May 1. The Hornets will face the winner of the Idaho State/Weber State match. Match time is TBA. The Hornets will be looking for their fourth-straight Big Sky Championship and the teams sixth title in the last seven years.
