MISSOULA, Mont. - The Sacramento State men’s tennis team claim the doubles point and never looked back as the Hornets won a crucial Big Sky Conference match, defeating host Montana, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in Missoula, Mont. Rainy weather conditions struck the Lindsay Tennis Center midway thru the singles portion of the match which forced the two teams to finish indoors at the Missoula Athletic Club. With the win, Sacramento State improves to 11-8 overall, 3-1 in league play while the Grizzlies fell to 6-10 overall, 1-5 in the Big Sky.Sacramento State opened the afternoon by taking two of the three doubles matches to win the point. At the No. 1 doubles, senior Nick Sheehan and freshman Joakim Rydberg defeated Gus Treyz and Stuart Wing, 8-3. At the two, juniors Matt Jones and Peter Farkas defeated Ryan O’Neill and Varun Giri, 8-5. At the three, freshmen Warwick Foy and Assad Malik fell to Jan Steenkamp and Sean Stewart, 8-4.
In singles play, Jones had his seven-match winning streak snapped, as the Woodland Hills, Calif., native fell to Steenkamp, 6-3, 6-2, at the one. Jones still leads the squad with at 13-6 singles record. At the two, Rydberg picked up his sixth win of the year as he defeated O’Neill, 6-4, 6-1. Sheehan picked up his fourth singles win of the season as he defeated Wing at the three, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. Foy dropped the other singles match to Giri, 6-1, 7-6, at No. 4 singles. Farkas improved to 12-7 on the season as he defeated Treyz, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, at the six. At the six, freshman Will McAlister improved to 4-1 in his young career as he defeated Stewart, 6-1, 6-3.
Sacramento State returns to action on Sunday, as the Hornets travel across state to take on host Montana State. First serve against the Bobcats is set for 11:00 a.m. PDT. The Bobcats currently lead the conference with a 5-0 record as they wrap up league play against the Hornets. If Sacramento State defeats MSU, and then defeats Idaho State next week at home, the Hornets will wrap up the number one seed at the Big Sky Tournament.
