SACRAMENTO, Calif. - After having its four-match winning streak snapped by Santa Clara, the Sacramento State men’s tennis team got back to its winning ways as the Hornets defeated Eastern Washington, 6-1, in a Big Sky Conference match at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club Friday afternoon. With the win, the Hornets improve to 10-8 overall, 2-1 in the Big Sky while the Eagles remain winless on the year and fall to 0-8, 0-4.Sacramento State opened the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches to win the point. At the No. 1 doubles, senior Nick Sheehan and freshman Joakim Rydberg defeated Kevin Erickson and Aaron Heier, 8-1. At the two, juniors Matt Jones and Peter Farkas defeated Eric Eggers and Michael Mosback, 8-0. At the three, freshmen Warwick Foy and Ramon Perez defeated Shane Caskey and Brandon Hair, 8-2.
In singles play, Jones picked up his seventh-consecutive victory, as the Woodland Hills, Calif., native defeated Erickson, 6-0, 6-2, at the one. Jones leads the squad with at 13-5 singles record and has now won eight-straight matches. At the two, Rydberg picked up his fifth win of the year as he defeated Heier, 6-4, 6-0. Foy cruised to an easy 6-0, 6-2 win over Mosback at the three. Foy evens his singles record at 8-8. Farkas played his first match of the season at No. 4 singles and took advantage of it, as he swept Caskey, 6-0, 6-0. Farkas improved to 11-7 on the season. At the five, freshman Will McAlister improved to 3-1 in his young career as he defeated Eggers, 6-2, 3-6, and 10-6 in the super-tiebreaker. At the six, freshman Assad Malik made his collegiate debut and lost a heartbreaker, falling in the super-tiebreak to Hair, 6-2, 2-6, 10-6.
Sacramento State returns to action on Friday, April 16, as the Hornets travel to Missoula, Montana to face the Montana Grizzlies. Match time is TBA. The next day, Sacramento State will journey cross-state to take on the Montana State Bobcats. First serve for that match is set for 10 a.m. PDT.
