CAL SWEEPS MEN’S TENNIS AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP

BERKELEY, Calif. --- California dropped just three games in singles play and the No. 4 Golden Bears cruised past Sacramento State, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship Saturday afternoon.

The win improved Cal to 19-4 overall. The Hornets, who won the 2003 Big Sky Conference title, ended their season at 12-16.

The Golden Bears picked up the first point of the match with a pair of doubles wins. The No. 1 team of Steve Berke and Robert Kowalczyk (ranked 8th nationally) downed Nick Sheehan and Anders Albertsen, 8-1. Cal clinched the doubles point when Patrick Briaud and John Paul Fruttero defeated Peter Farkas and Lewis Van Splunteren, 8-3, at No. 2. The No.3 match was not completed.

In singles play, the Golden Bears recorded three quick victories. The first point came at No. 3 where Or Dekel knocked off Jakub Silva, 6-0, 6-1. Conor Niland, who is ranked 36th in the latest NCAA rankings, made the score 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Albertsen. Fruttero sealed the match with a 6-0, 6-1, victory over Sheehan at No. 1.

Sacramento State was making its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the last five years.

Cal advanced to play Arizona in the second round.
