WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO USC, 4-0, IN NCAA FIRST ROUND

5/9/2003

2003 Big Sky Champions, 16-8
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Sacramento State women’s tennis team ended its season today after a 4-0 loss to fifth-ranked University of Southern California in the first round of the NCAA Championships. The Hornets finished the season with a 16-8 overall record.

The Hornets struggled early in the match with doubles play dominated by Stanford. Roberta Fessenko and Amanda Sanches lost their match to Luana Magnani and Gabriela Anita Loyola, 8-4, while Petra Abraham and Cristina Rivieccio were defeated by the tandem of Carine Vermeulen and Melissa Esmero, 8-0. Hornet duo Margarita Karnaukhova and Ann Roslund did not finish their match as the doubles point was clinched by USC.

In singles play, the Trojans won the first three matches to clinch the victory. Abraham was defeated by Brymer (6-1, 6-0), Sanches was defeated by Vermeulen (6-1, 6-1), and Rivieccio was defeated by Esmero (6-1, 6-1). Karnaukhova won the only set for the Hornets in her win over 10th-ranked Peterson (6-3), but due to the USC victory, they did not finish the second set.

Karnaukhova became the first women’s Sacramento State tennis player to be named Big Sky Most Valuable Player. Sacramento State tied a program-record as four players were named to the Big Sky all-conference team. Karnaukhova and Fessenko were each named to the first team while Roslund was named to the second team and Abraham received honorable mention honors. Bill Campbell was also named Big Sky Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive year after leading Sacramento State to its second-straight Big Sky Conference Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.
