HORNET WOMEN’S TENNIS EARNS BIG SKY CONFERENCE HONORS

5/9/2002

OGDEN, Utah — The Sacramento State women’s tennis team received the most all-conference selections in Div. I history (1992-pres.) after four players were named to the all-Big Sky Conference teams Thursday. The conference also announced that head coach Bill Campbell was named women’s tennis coach of the year for his efforts in leading Sacramento State to its best record in school history (20-3 overall, 6-0 Big Sky) and the program’s first NCAA Tournament bid.

Senior Gabriella Lundqvist and junior Marta Gronowicz were named first team all-Big Sky and sophomore Petra Abraham and freshman Amanda Sanches were each named to the second team.

Lundqvist, a native of Bastad, Sweden, went 12-11 overall, including a 10-8 record at No. 1 singles. This is the second-consecutive year Lundqvist has been named first team all-conference.

A native of Saskatoon, Canada, Gronowicz went 17-5 at the No. 2 singles spot for the Hornets. She was named Big Sky Player of the Week on April 2 for leading the Hornets to victories over Portland and Gonzaga. Last season, she was named second team all-Big Sky.

Abraham had an overall singles'' record of 12-5. The Budapest, Hungary, native posted an 11-5 mark at No. 4 singles and a 1-0 record at the No. 3 singles spot.

Sanches, a native of Rio de Janiero, Brazil, led the team with a 20-2 singles mark, which was the second-best record in the conference. She was named Big Sky Player of the Week on March 12 for her efforts in leading the Hornets to a win over rival Pacific. She also recorded an 18-4 overall record in doubles play.

Campbell was named Big Sky Coach of the Year after leading the women’s team to its first top 75 ranking in program history in addition to the program’s first-ever Big Sky championship. A well-known figure in the Sacramento region tennis circles, he now owns a career record of 37-43. Campbell took over the program in 1999 after the team finished with a record of 1-15.

Sacramento State (20-3, 6-0 Big Sky) will play No. 2 Stanford (21-1) on Friday, May 10, at 2 p.m. at the Taube Family Tennis Center on the Stanford campus in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the match will play the Pepperdine/Long Beach State winner on Saturday afternoon
