JONES NAMED BIG SKY MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

OGDEN, Utah — Freshman Matthew Jones has been named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for his efforts in leading the Sacramento State men’s tennis team team to the Big Sky Pacific Regional championship on April 21 at Weber State. The Hornets defeated Northern Arizona, Portland State and Weber State to win its fifth-consecutive regional championship.

The Woodland Hills, Calif., native won all three of his matches last weekend. On Friday, he defeated NAU’s Jeff Johnson, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. On Saturday, he beat PSU’s Tanner Gates, 6-0, 6-2. In Sunday’s match, Jones defeated WSU’s Kenny Lindley, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1. He is currently 8-9 on the year and has won five of his last seven matches.

Sacramento State will receive a first-round bye at the Big Sky Championships on Friday-Sunday, April 26-28, in Bozeman, Mont. The Hornets will play the winner of the Idaho State/Weber State match in the semifinals on Saturday, April 27 at 2 p.m. MDT. Sacramento State is searching for its second-consecutive Big Sky championship, and fourth title in the last five years. The Big Sky champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
