MORAGA, Calif.-- The Sacramento State men''s tennis team ended its four-match losing streak by defeating the Saint Mary''s Gaels, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Korth Tennis Complex. The Hornets improve their record to 6-10 on the year.Sacramento State began the day by winning the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. In the No. 1 doubles match, senior Sherif Zaher and freshman Matthew Jones lost to Arturo Planell and Frank Schmitt, 9-8. Senior Fabio Jesus and freshman Peter Farkas defeated J.J. Whitlinger and Thomas Burgemeister, 8-6. Sophomore Nick Sheehan and senior Josh Price won their doubles match over Philip Laubscher and Filip Sarovic, 8-5, to win the doubles point.
In singles play, Zaher defeated Burgemeister at the No. 1 position, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, to run his team-leading singles record to 10-6. Jesus, playing in the No. 2 position, defeated Planell, 7-5, 6-4. Jones lost his No. 3 singles to Schmitt, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 to give the Gaels its lone point. Abbou runs his singles record on the year to 9-7, with a 3-6, 6-4 (13-11) win over Sarovic in the super tiebreak. Sheehan defeated Whittlinger, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot. Farkas won his No. 6 match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Josh Farley.
Sacramento State wraps up the regular season this Tuesday, April 16, as they travel down I-5 to face rival Pacific. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
