SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Fresh off tying its best record in the Div. I history (11-10), the Sacramento State women's tennis team placed three members on the Big Sky all-conference team, it was announced today.
Junior Gabriella Lundqvist was named to the first team, sophomore Marta Gronowicz was placed on the second team and senior Caroline Svensson earned honorable mention honors. Prior to this season, the Hornets had never placed as many as three players on the all-conference team since joining the Big Sky in 1997.
Lundqvist, who earned conference player of the week honors on March 13, finished the season with a 13-8 record, including 11-8 at No. 1 and 1-0 at both the Nos. 2 and 3 slots. The Bastad, Sweden, native also teamed with Svensson to go 14-5 at No. 2 doubles. Lundqvist posted a seven-match winning streak earlier in the year and recorded straight-set victories in nine of her 13 singles matches.
Gronowicz earned second team honors after finishing the year with a 15-6 singles record, including 2-0 at the No. 1 slot and 13-6 at No. 2. The Saskatoon, Canada, native won her first eight matches of the season and 10 of her first 11 overall. Gronowicz teamed with Janice Mota to go 11-10 at No. 1 doubles. Of her 15 singles victories, 13 came in straight sets.
Svennson received honorable mention honors after finishing the year with a team-best 16-3 singles record while going 16-2 at No. 3 and 0-1 at No. 4. The Gothenburg, Sweden, native, who transferred to Sacramento State in 1999 after playing two years at North Central Texas College, went 11-10 at No. 1 doubles with Gronowicz. After losing her first singles match of the season, Svennson won 16 of her next 18 matches including winning streaks of six and 10 matches, respectively.
The Sacramento State women's tennis team, which also won the team trophy at the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament in the independent college draw two weekends ago, returns seven of nine players for next season.
