OJAI, Calif. -- The Sacramento State men's and women's tennis teams
each accounted for a doubles championship in the independent college
doubles draw at the 101st Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament Sunday
afternoon.
The men's doubles team of Joseph Gilbert and Chris Smith defeated
Rodrigo Suarez and Chad Abby of Point Loma Nazarene University, 6-0,
6-3, in the championship match. On the women's side, both of the
Sacramento State doubles teams that entered the draw met in the
championship match as Gabriella Lundqvist and Caroline Svennson
defeated Marta Gronowicz and Janice Mota, 6-1, 6-3, in the
championship match.
In singles play, Lundqvist reached the semifinals of the women's
independent college singles draw before losing to Cal State
Bakersfield's Krisztina Tamas, 6-1, 6-4. Gronowicz reached the
quarters before losing to Point Loma Nazarene's Anna Sieczka, 7-5,
6-2.
Smith reached the quarterfinals of the men's independent college
singles draw before losing to Azusa Pacific's Benny Lin, 6-3, 6-7,
6-4.
The Ojai Tournament marked the last competition of the season for the
Sacramento State women's team as it finished the season with an 11-10
dual meet record, tying its best mark in Div. I history (set by the
1992 squad).
The Hornet men's team will find out this Thursday, May 3, where it
will be playing in the NCAA Tournament (first round begins May
12-13). Sacramento State received an automatic berth into the NCAA
Tournament after winning the Big Sky Conference championship on April
22.
