CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE IS CROWNED BIG SKY CONFERENCE WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Cal State Northridge won its first-ever Big Sky

Conference women's tennis title after defeating Weber State, 4-1, in

the conference championship match Sunday afternoon at Rio Del Oro

Racquet Club in Sacramento, Calif.

The Matadors, who defeated Montana State and Montana to advance to

the championship match, now have an overall record of 22-9 this year.

Weber State, which entered the tournament as the defending conference

champions, dropped to 14-6 with the loss.

Cal State Northridge won two of the three doubles matches to pick up

the doubles point. The tandems of Tereza Simonyan/Gabriella Reiner

(No. 2) and Tia Kaasalainen/Rani Setiawati (No. 3) won by the scores

of 8-6 and 9-7, respectively.

Simonyan (No. 2), Reiner (No. 3) and Setiawati (No. 5) each posted

straight-set victories in singles play for Cal State Northridge.

Weber State's Lenka Zacharova (No. 1) picked up the Wildcats' lone

point with her victory over Marina Baydak.

Weber State, which had won 10 of the past 16 conference titles,

advanced to the championship match after defeating Northern Arizona

in the semifinals.

The Matadors receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships,

which take place May 12-13.

Earlier in the day, the Sacramento State men's tennis team claimed

its third Big Sky title in the last four years with a 5-1 victory

over Northern Arizona.
