SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The first day of the Big Sky Conference Tennis Championships was completed today as Cal State Northridge and Northern Arizona advanced to the semifinals in the women's draw and Northern Arizona and Montana State advanced to the semifinal round in the men's draw.
All matches were forced indoors by driving rain that swept throughout the Sacramento area all day. The men played their matches at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club in Sacramento, Calif., while the women played at Willow Creek Racquet Club in Citrus Heights, Calif. Due to time constraints, each match was stopped after one team picked up the necessary four points for victory because of the lack of indoor courts (two at Rio Del Oro and three at Willow Creek).
On the men's side, Northern Arizona defeated Montana, 4-0, in the first match of the day as Rodolfo Cisneros, Daniel Lundstrom, Erik Karlsson and Adrian Venturi were each victorious in singles play for the Lumberjacks. In the second match, Montana State defeated Weber State, 4-3, as both teams picked up three singles victories. The Bobcats won the decisive fourth point on the strength of their No. 1 (Thijs Goossens/BJ Hauck) and No. 2 (Chris Tokar/Lukasz Mazur) doubles teams which won by the scores of 8-3 and 9-8 (7-4), respectively.
In the women's draw, Cal State Northridge beat Montana State, 4-0. The Matadors' Marina Baydak, Tereza Simonyan, Gabriella Reiner and Tia Kaasalainen each won their singles matches in straight sets. In the second match of the day, Northern Arizona defeated Idaho State, 4-2, behind singles victories from Susanna Wallin, Karen Kmiec, Kathy Kmiec and Michelle Mohr.
The women's semifinal matches begin tomorrow (Saturday, April 21) as Cal State Northridge faces Montana at 10 a.m. before Northern Arizona squares off with Weber State at 11:30 a.m. Both Weber State and Montana received first round byes after winning their respective regionals last weekend.
The men's semifinal matches begin tomorrow at 2 p.m. as Sacramento State faces Montana State at 2 p.m. before Northern Arizona faces Idaho State at 3:30 p.m. The Hornets enter the tournament looking for their third Big Sky title in the last four years. Both Sacramento State and Idaho State received first round byes after winning their respective regionals last weekend.
The men's and women's championship matches will be played Sunday, April 22, at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
