OGDEN, Utah -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team cruised to an
easy victory over Portland State, 7-0, in its first match of the Big
Sky Conference Pacific Regionals in Ogden, Utah, this morning. The
match was played at the Ogden High School tennis courts due to snow.
With the victory, Sacramento State (11-6) tied its Div. I record for
most victories in a season, set by the 1992 squad (11-10).
The Hornets' Nos. 2-5 singles each won their respective matches in
straight sets by a score of 6-0, 6-0 while junior Gabriella Lundqvist
(No. 1) won her match over the Viking's Melinda Johnson, 6-3, 6-1.
Marta Gronowicz, Caroline Svensson, Janice Mota and Italina Kirknis
were victorious in singles' action. Junior Laila Karim (No. 6) won by
default due to a forfeit.
Sacramento State picked up the doubles point after winning matches at
the Nos. 1 and 3 position by a score of 8-1. The No. 3 doubles tandem
of Karim and Kirknis also won by default due to forfeit.
