SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State senior Kevin Vieira was named
Big Sky Conference Tennis Player of the Week after leading to the
Hornets to a 3-1 record and a third place finish at the Anteater
Classic in Irvine, Calif.
Vieira, who becomes the fourth Hornet to receive the honor this
season, went a perfect 4-0 at No. 6 singles while also teaming with
Sylvain Iff to go 3-1 at No. 3 doubles.
The Turlock, Calif., native dropped just two sets in singles play
while posting victories over Jacksonville's Kamal Lelboutuouri (6-0,
6-1), UC Irvine's Renouk Wijemanne (6-3, 7-6), Memphis' Michael
LaHaie (6-1, 2-6, 6-2) and Texas A&M Corpus Christi's Jason Holland
(6-4, 4-6, 6-2).
For the season, Vieira is now 11-2 in singles play, including 1-0 at
No. 4, 2-1 at No. 5 and 8-1 at No. 6. In doubles play, he is 11-3
overall, including 2-1 at No. 2 and 9-2 at No. 3.
Sacramento State has now claimed five of the six conference player of
the week honors this season. Junior Fabio Jesus (Feb. 28), senior
Chris Smith (March 6) and junior Sherif Zaher (March 13 and March 20)
have each received the honor.
The Hornets, who are currently 13-2 overall this season, play at the
Big Sky Regionals in Ogden, Utah, this Thursday-Saturday, April 12-14.
