MEN’S TENNIS FALLS TO PACIFIC IN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE MATCH OF THE SEASON

4/10/2012

Freshman Tom Miller won his match at No. 6 singles

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Sacramento State freshmen Marek Marksoo and Tom Miller were each victorious, but it was not enough as the Hornets fell, 4-2, to Pacific in a non-conference indoor men’s tennis match Tuesday afternoon at the InShape Heath Club. Doubles was not played due to time constraints.

The Hornets (8-12) were playing their final non-conference match of the season as the team will play league foe Idaho State on Saturday to wrap up the regular season schedule. Sacramento State will host the Big Sky Tournament on April 21-22 at the Gold River Racquet Club.

Pacific improved to 8-11 with the win.

Using a singles lineup that consisted of four freshmen, the Hornets kept all six matches close, but failed to scratch away more than two wins. Marksoo saved six match points before eventually winning his match at No. 3 over Alex Golding, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5). Miller earned his second singles win of the season with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 win over Alex Hamilton at No. 6.

The Hornets’ Aliaksandr Malko (5-7, 6-4, 6-1) fell to Ben Mirkin at No. 1, Javier Millan dropped his match to Ivan Castro at No. 2 (7-6, 6-0), Sean Kolar lost at No. 4 to Erik Cederwall (6-4, 6-3) and Roy Brandys fell at No. 5 to Valentim Goncalves (6-3, 7-6).

The win for Marksoo was his ninth straight, and the true freshman improved to a team-best 15-3 with the win. Miller evened his singles record to 2-2 with the victory.
