MARKSOO EARNS SECOND BIG SKY MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State freshman Marek Marksoo was named the Big Sky Conference men’s tennis player of the week after leading the Hornets to a 2-0 record last week, including a 4-3 victory in a first-place showdown with Eastern Washington.
It marked the second time Marksoo has been named player of the week as he also earned the award on Feb. 21.
The Tallinn, Estonia, native went 2-0 in singles play at No. 3, and 2-0 in doubles play at No. 1 with teammate Javier Millan.
In singles play, he combined to drop just seven games over two matches, defeating Eastern Washington’s Mario Navarro by a 6-2, 6-1 score, and UC Riverside’s Austin Andres by a 6-3, 6-1 score. The Eastern Washington match was the biggest of the season for the Hornets as both teams entered the contest with 3-0 Big Sky records.
Marksoo also posted two relatively easy victories in doubles play, teaming with Millan to beat tandems from Eastern Washington (8-3) and UC Riverside (8-2).
Marksoo has been the Hornets’ most consistent player since the beginning of the season, and currently owns a team-best 11-3 record in singles play. That includes a 2-0 record at No. 3, 3-1 at No. 4, and 6-2 at No. 5. He has won five straight singles competitions, matching his longest winning streak of the season. In doubles play, he is 6-6, having played at all three positions in the ladder.
Sacramento State (6-10, 4-0) is currently tied atop the Big Sky standings with Montana. The Hornets play twice this week on the road, including matchups with Montana State on Saturday, and Montana on Sunday.
