DENVER, Colo. -- Denver’s Yannick Weihs, Max Krammer, Jens Vorkefeld and Othar Kordsachia each won in straight sets to lead the 55th-ranked Pioneers to a 7-0 victory over Sacramento State in a non-conference men’s tennis match Sunday morning at the Gates Tennis Center.
Sacramento State fell to 3-7 with the loss while Denver improved to 8-7. The Hornets, who used four freshmen in the team’s singles lineup, have now seen four of their seven losses come against ranked opposition. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranks the top 75 teams in the nation.
Denver was victorious in two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Sacramento State won at No. 2 doubles with the tandem of Tom Miller and Sean Kolar defeating Krammer and Enej Bonin.
In singles play, Sacramento State’s Aliaksandr Malko lost at No. 1 (6-2, 4-6, 6-1), Javier Millan fell at No. 2 (6-4, 6-3), Kolar lost his match at No. 3 (7-6, 6-0), Roy Brandys lost at No. 4 (6-2, 6-1), Jonathan Hultkrantz fell at No. 5 (6-4, 6-4) and Miller dropped his match at No. 6 (6-3, 4-6, 6-3). Miller was making his first appearance of the season in the singles lineup as Marek Marksoo sat out the match after injuring his groin yesterday against Utah.
Kolar, Brandys, Hultkrantz and Miller are all freshmen.
Today completed a stretch that saw Sacramento State play three matches in as many days, which included a victory over Big Sky Conference foe Northern Colorado on Friday and a loss to Utah yesterday. The team returns to action on Saturday, March 17, when the Hornets play a neutral-site match against Columbia in Arlington, Texas.
