SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State's Kevin Kurtz was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northwest Region Men's Tennis Assistant Coach of the Year today.
Kurtz recently completed his eighth season as an assistant with the Hornet men's tennis program. During his tenure, the Sacramento native has helped coach the Hornets to a 125-84 overall record, a 59-4 mark in the Big Sky Conference, six NCAA Tournament appearances (2007, 2009-13), six conference tournament crowns (2007, 2009-13) and six Big Sky regular season championships (2007-11, 2013).
In addition, the Hornets have received a combined 31 all-conference selections during his eight seasons, including 20 first team selections and six MVP awards.
Kurtz has his finger prints an array of duties for the men's tennis program, including recruiting, on-court coaching, scheduling, travel, budget and equipment. In addition, he serves as the liaison between the team and other athletics department staff.
Despite using a singles lineup that consisted of at least five underclassmen in every match this season, Sacramento State qualified for the NCAA Tournament after winning the Big Sky Tournament crown. The program also won the league's regular season title, had five players named all-league (including conference MVP Marek Marksoo), and finished with a 17-13 overall record and 9-1 mark in the Big Sky.
No stranger to Sacramento tennis, the 20-year coaching veteran also had local coaching stops at American River College, Jesuit High School and Loretto High School. He was named The Sacramento Bee High School Coach of the Year in 2004 after leading Loretto HS to the first boys tennis section championship in school history.
