SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State sophomore Tom Miller was named the Big Sky Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week today after helping the Hornets to a pair of non-conference road wins last week against UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount.
The weekly honor is the first Miller has received during his career, and marks the fourth time during the first 10 weeks of the season a Sacramento State player has earned the award.
Miller, who is a native of Great Missenden, England, went 2-0 in both singles and doubles play. Both his singles wins came at No. 6 in the team's lineup, and the doubles wins came at No. 3.
His biggest win of the week came on Saturday, and helped the Hornets overcame a 3-2 deficit to defeat Loyola Marymount by a 4-3 score. With the Hornets trailing, 3-2, Miller saved four match points in the third set of his match before eventually defeating Felix Van Kann, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5. That tied things at 3-3, and teammate Marek Marksoo eventually won his match at No. 1 to give the Hornets the win.
In Sacramento State's 6-1 win at UC Riverside on Friday, Miller beat Kelly Dickson by a 6-3, 6-2 score.
In doubles play, Miller teamed with Henrik Raag to post 8-1 victories on both Friday and Saturday.
Miller has now won eight of his last 10 singles matches, and improved his record to 11-8 this season. He is also 10-9 in doubles play.
Sacramento State (9-10) has won six of its last eight matches, and completed a five-match road trip on Sunday with a 4-1 record. The team returns to action on Saturday for a home conference doubleheader against North Dakota (10 a.m.) and Northern Colorado (3 p.m.).
