RAM NAMED BIG SKY MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State redshirt freshman Niranjan Ram was named the Big Sky Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week after helping the Hornets to home wins over North Dakota, Northern Colorado and Montana over a three-day stretch from Saturday through Monday.
The weekly honor is the first Ram has received during his career, and marks the fifth time during the first 11 weeks of the season a Sacramento State player has earned the award. The Hornets currently sit second in the Big Sky standings with a 7-1 league record, just a game back of first-place Idaho State (6-0).
Ram went a perfect 3-0 in singles play at No. 4, and 3-0 in doubles play at No. 3 in the team's lineup. The Tamil Nadu, India, native won all three of his singles matches in straight sets, and dropped a combined 11 games in the process over those three matches.
He beat North Dakota's Grant Bakke (6-2, 6-2) on Saturday morning before coming back later in the day to knock off Northern Colorado's Jordan Loughnan, 6-1, 6-2. On Monday, he beat Montana's Ethan Vaughn, 6-2, 6-2. He was the first or second Hornet to finish off his victory in all three matches, and each of his opponents failed to win more than two games in any set played.
In doubles, Ram teamed with Henrik Raag at No. 3 to beat teams from North Dakota (8-1), Northern Colorado (8-4) and Montana (8-4).
He has now played at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 in the team's singles lineup, and has posted an 11-11 record. That includes a 5-1 mark when playing at No. 4.
Sacramento State (12-10, 7-1) has won five straight, and eight of its last nine matches. There are currently four teams in the Big Sky standings with one conference loss or less, comprised of Idaho State (6-0), Sacramento State (7-1), Montana State (5-1) and Montana (4-1). The Hornets dealt both Montana and Montana State their lone league loss.
