SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Sacramento State men''s soccer team and San Diego State played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck. The Hornets are now 4-6-4 overall and 1-1-1 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play while the Aztecs moved their record to 4-10-2, 0-3-1.Freshman goalkeeper Matt McDougall earned his third shut out of the season by tallying a game-high seven saves to lead the Hornets. The most important save came in the 58th minute on a penalty kick attempt by SDSU''s Paul Szefler.
After Eric Wohl was taken down by a Hornet defender in the goalkeeper''s box, Szefler directed the ensuing penalty kick towards the left corner of the net. McDougall was able to guess his dive correctly and slap the shot away safely.
Aztec goalkeeper Brian Barnes earned his second shutout of the season with four saves.
Both teams were evenly matched with SDSU finishing with a game-high 17 shots compared to Sacramento State''s 15. The Aztecs did however finish with four yellow cards and three red cards while the Hornets only earned one yellow card in the contest. SDSU played the final 32 minutes of the match with a man short and without its head coach due to red card infractions.
Sacramento State had its best chance to score in the 67th minute when sophomore forward Patrick Nelle fired a shot towards the left corner of the Aztecs'' goal. Barnes dove and managed to deflect the shot off of the left goalpost to preserve the tie.
Junior midfielder Joel Rodriguez and sophomore midfielder Ricky Rodriguez led Sacramento State with four shots each. The Aztecs'' Nick Natale tallied four shots including a match-high four shots on goal.
Sacramento State will play its final four regular-season contests at Hornet Soccer Field beginning with New Mexico on Friday, Nov. 1, at 2:30 p.m.
