MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO NO. 25 UCSB, 3-0
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- UC Santa Barbara''s Rob Friend recorded two goals to lead the 25th-ranked Gauchos to a 3-0 win over the Sacramento State men''s soccer team Sunday afternoon at Harder Stadium. The Hornets are now 2-4-2 on the season while UC Santa Barbara raised its record to 7-0-0.After a scoreless first half, UC Santa Barbara took the first lead of the contest when Gene Deering recorded a goal in the 51st minute off an assist by teammate Memo Arzate. The Gauchos increased their lead when Friend recorded his first goal of the game in the 55th minute off a combination of assists by Arzate and Deering. Friend tallied his final goal in the 59th minute off of assists by Jon Apilado and Arzate to end the scoring in the match.
The Gauchos out shot the Hornets 19-1 in the contest and also finished with a game-high 12 corner kicks.
Sacramento State will next host Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 4 p.m. at Hornet Soccer Field. The match is the second of a scheduled doubleheader with the Hornet women''s soccer team. The squad will then complete the week against Fresno State on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 3 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
