RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Sophomore forward Patrick Nelle and freshman defender Utodi Madu each recorded their first goals of the season as the Sacramento State men''s soccer team tied UC Riverside 2-2 in double overtime, Sunday afternoon at UCR Soccer Field. It marked the first overtime contest for the Hornets in the 2002 season.Sacramento State (1-1-1) took the first lead of the contest when Nelle found the net in the 24th minute off an assist by junior forward David Fraser. The Highlanders (1-1-2) answered in the 58th minute when Luc Harrington scored off a pass by teammate Ben Davies. The Hornets regained the lead in the 79th minute when Madu recorded his first collegiate goal from 30-yards out. UC Riverside sent the contest into extra periods when Nick Supergan recorded a goal off a combination of assists by Juan Gutierrez and Jon Hunt. Each team combined for only three shots in two-overtime periods for the tie.
Freshman goalkeeper Matt McDougall recorded two saves in his first collegiate start for the Hornets. Sacramento State finished with a game-high 20 shots including 10 on goal while the Highlanders managed 11 shots with only four on goal. The Hornets finished their weekend road trip with a 1-0-1 record after recording their first win of the season on Friday against Cal Poly (3-1).
Sacramento State will host its first contest at newly renovated Hornet Soccer Field next week when the Hornets host UC Irvine on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m.
