MEN'S SOCCER DROPS 5-0 CONTEST TO NO. 2 STANFORD
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Mike Wilson and James Twellman each recorded two goals as No. 2 Stanford defeated the Sacramento State men''s soccer team 5-0 Saturday evening at Maloney Field. The contest marked the start of the 2002 season for each school.Each team missed opportunities to take the first lead of the contest until Twellman found the net with a header in the 33rd minute off of a corner kick by Seyi Ablaji. The Cardinal took a 2-0 halftime advantage after Wilson connected on his first goal of the evening, off an assist by Roger Levesque, with less than a minute remaining in the period.
In the second period, Wilson recorded his second goal of the contest off an assist by Matt Janusz in the 52nd minute. Johanes Maliza added a goal in the 69th minute and Twellman tallied his second goal in the 76th minute to seal the game. Todd Dunivant and Sean Whalen were each credited with assists, respectively.
Stanford tallied a game-high 12 shots (six on goal) while Sacramento State recorded six shots (four on goal).
The Hornets will next travel to Cal Poly on Friday, Sept. 6, at 8 p.m. in Mustang Stadium.
