MEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN SEASON OPENER AT OSU

Senior Max Alvarez placed three of his four shots on goal but the Hornets lost, 4-0.

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Sacramento State men's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision at Pac-12 conference member Oregon State on Friday night in both teams' season opener at Paul Lorenz Field.

The Hornets (0-1) held the Beavers (1-0) scoreless in the first 44 minutes but Oregon State turned it on just before halftime.

Oregon State's Jake Parker scored with only nine seconds left on the clock in the first half and the Beavers carried that momentum in the second half. Oregon State scored three more times in the first 12 minutes after the break.

Sacramento State was led offensively by senior forward Max Alvarez, who placed three of his four shots on goal. He paced the Hornets in both categories. As a team, the Hornets tallied seven shots with Alvarez's strikes the only three placed on net. Oregon State recorded nine shots with five on goal.

Preseason second team all-Big West goalkeeper Cesar Castillo allowed all four goals while making one save. Matt Bersano played between the pipes for the Beavers and recorded a clean sheet with three saves.

The teams combined for 23 fouls and four yellow cards in the game.

After a road game to start the 2012 season, the Hornets will come back to Sacramento for three straight home games. Sacramento State plays host to San Diego on Aug. 31, Saint Mary's on Sept. 2 and Seattle U on Sept. 5.
