LINENBERGER, SILVEIRA EACH SCORE IN 2-0 MEN'S SOCCER WIN OVER SAN FRANCISCO

9/4/2011

Gabe Silveira

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Matt Linenberger and Gabriel Silveira each scored second half goals to lead the Sacramento State men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over San Francisco, Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.

The win improved the Hornets to 2-1 on the season and gave the team its second shutout of the year. The Dons fell to 0-3.

After a scoreless first period, Sacramento State jumped on the board in the 53rd minute when Linenberger's cross across the middle was deflected into the net by a USF defender for the first goal of the game.

The Hornets added to their lead in the 71st minute when Silveira scored for the first time this season. Bryan Baker, who had checked into the game minutes earlier, started the run with a long dribble up the right sideline. Baker then crossed the ball across the front of the net where Silveira hammered a shot off the hands of a diving Brendan Roslund for the goal.

Bryan Oliver, who was making his first start of the season, recorded his 10th career clean sheet without having to make a save.

As a team, the Hornets outshot USF 10-6. Sacramento State also had the advantage on corner kicks, 4-2, while fouls were equal at 12.

The Hornets remain at home to take on William Jessup at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9. The team will then welcome Oregon State on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m.
