MEN’S SOCCER DROPS ROAD GAME AT UC RIVERSIDE
9/1/2011
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- UC Riverside’s Aaron Long, Hayden Leslie and Ivan Garcia each scored goals to lead the Highlanders to a 3-0 victory over Sacramento State in a non-conference men’s soccer game Thursday evening at UCR Soccer Stadium.
With the victory, the Highlanders improved to 1-1 on the young season while Sacramento State dropped to 1-1. Dating back to last season, the Hornets, who are currently ranked fifth in the Far West Region, had lost just once in the last nine games prior to tonight’s loss. It also marked the first time in nine games Sacramento State has been shut out dating back to the 2010 season.
UC Riverside opened the scoring in the 26th minute after Long collected a rebound and scored from seven yards out. The Highlanders added a pair of goals in the second half, the first coming in the 60th minute when Garcia scored and the last coming in the waning minutes of the game when Leslie scored from 20 yards out.
The Highlanders outshot the Hornets, 27-8, putting nine of those attempts on frame. UC Riverside also carried a 12-4 advantage in corner kicks. The only Sacramento State player to put a shot on goal was junior defender Matt Linenberger.
The Hornets will now embark upon a season-long three-game homestand, beginning this Sunday with the home opener against San Francisco at 4 p.m. The Hornets will also host William Jessup (Sept. 9) and Oregon State (Sept. 11) during the homestand. Sacramento State will carry a 21-game home unbeaten streak (16-0-5) into Sunday’s game against San Francisco, a streak which dates back to 2008.
