MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS SJSU IN OVERTIME, 1-0, SECURES SPOT IN MPSF TOURNAMENT

11/6/2010

Chris Bettencourt scored the game-winning goal in overtime against San Jose State.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Chris Bettencourt knocked in his sixth goal of the season but none were more important as his overtime score gave his squad a 1-0 victory over San Jose State on Saturday night and secured the Hornets a spot in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament.

Bettencourt knocked in the game-winning goal just 1:15 into the overtime period after both teams were held scoreless for the previous 90 minutes. Gabriel Silveira found Bettencourt in the box with a pass and Bettencourt beat the keeper to score on an empty net.

The win provided the Hornets three points in the league standings, giving them 12 on the season. UNLV, sitting just ahead of the Hornets in the standings prior to the game, lost to New Mexico 3-2 on Saturday, keeping the Rebels at 11 and allowing the Hornets to jump into the No. 5 seed in the MPSF Tournament.

The MPSF Tournament starts on Thursday with the No. 6 seed UNLV playing the No. 3 seed New Mexico at 11 a.m. and the No. 5 seeded Hornets battling the No. 4 seed Air Force at 2 p.m. The No. 1 seed Denver and No. 2 seed Cal State Bakersfield each earn byes and will play the Thursday winners on Friday. If the Hornets advance, they will play at 2 p.m. on Friday as well. The MPSF Championship game is at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All games take place on Hornet Soccer Field.

On Sunday, San Jose State blasted 27 shots compared to just 12 by the Hornets, but Sacramento State had eight shots on goal while SJSU had just six.

Both teams were whistled for 12 fouls but yellow cards were issued frequently, with the Spartans being carded five times and the Hornets earning one.
