MEN'S SOCCER DRAWS WITH BAKERSFIELD

10/8/2010

Cesar Castillo made six saves against CSUB in his fourth shutout of the season.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men's soccer team played Cal State Bakersfield to a 0-0 scoreless draw in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match-up on Friday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. Sacramento State now sits at 5-2-3 (0-0-2 MPSF) while CSUB's record is 6-3-1 (1-0-1).

Sacramento has not lost since it's second game of the season, on Sept. 5 at then-No. 11 ranked Duke. During that eight game stretch, the Hornets won five straight and have now tied three straight games, including their first two MPSF contests. The record unbeaten streak in Hornet men's soccer history is 10 matches.

Freshman goalkeeper Cesar Castillo lowered his goals against average on the season to just 0.73 after blanking the Roadrunners. Castillo made six saves on Friday and now has 38 saves on the season to go with four shutouts.

Despite playing a man up for the second half and overtime periods after a CSUB red card, the Hornets could not get a goal on the CSUB defense.

The Roadrunners sagged their defense back and took just four shots in the second half after blasting six in the first period. The Hornets managed three shots in the first half but took 10 in the second half, three in the first overtime period and another in the second overtime.

As a team, the Hornets took 17 shots, placing six on goal, while CSUB took 12 shots, also placing six on goal.

It was also nearly even in corner kicks, with the Roadrunners taking eight and the Hornets with six. It was a physically game, with 39 total fouls and eight yellow cards to go with the one red card.

The Hornets will now hit the road for their first road MPSF match of the season at Seattle. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
