MEN'S SOCCER UPSETS NO. 10 UC IRVINE, 2-0
9/19/2010

Freshman Cesar Castillo made seven saves in his second clean sheet victory this season.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Cousins Chris Bettencourt and Adam Bettencourt each scored for the Hornets as the Sacramento State men's soccer team knocked off No. 10 ranked UC Irvine, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. Sacramento State improves to 4-2-0 on the year while UC Irvine falls to 5-1-0.
The Anteaters, who entered the game undefeated, had not allowed a goal in their previous five games this season. The Hornets have now won four straight games and shutout their last three opponents - Stanford, Loyola Marymount and UC Irvine.
The Hornets first got on the board early in the game following a 3-on-2 situation where Fernando Cabadas changed sides by taking a pass from the far side and redirecting it to the near side where Chris Bettencourt was all alone. The Hilmar, Calif., native calmly shot the ball across the keeper to the far post for his third goal of the season.
Early in the second half Adam Bettencourt kept the scoring in the family when he beat the keeper on a break away following a through ball from his cousin that slipped past the Anteater defense.
Sacramento State freshman keeper Cesar Castillo recorded the clean sheet victory, the second of his young career after also blanking Stanford on the road on Sept. 12. Castillo had seven saves.
UC Irvine had a huge advantage in both shots (20-8), shots on goal (7-2) and corner kicks (10-3) but could not break through against a stingy Hornet defense and Castillo in net. The Anteaters thought they had tied the game at one point but the score was called back due to offsides. UC Irvine was whistled twice for offsides while the Hornets were flagged for it four times.
This was the second game of a six-game homestand for the Hornets. Sacramento State will battle William Jessup and Santa Clara next weekend at Hornet Soccer Field.
