MEN'S SOCCER DOWNS FRESNO PACIFIC 3-1 IN FINAL EXHIBITION TUNE-UP

8/28/2010

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men's soccer team defeated Fresno Pacific 3-1 on Saturday evening at the Hornet Soccer Field in the Hornets final exhibition game of the 2010 season. Chris BettencourtChimdum Mez and David Norton all scored for Sacramento State while Ernesto Carranza assisted on two of the goals.

Bettencourt scored the first goal of the game in the eighth minute after Carranza fed a perfect pass through the defense. Bettencourt took the pass and fired a low shot across the feet of the keeper to the far post. But after Fresno Pacific tied it up at 1-1 less than two minutes later the play went back and forth until the Hornets put the game away just before halftime.

In the 35th minutes, Carranza collected a short corner kick and chipped the ball into the box where Norton used a header to redirect the ball into the back of the net. The Hornets scored again less than four minutes later when Bettencourt slotted a low pass along the end line that a sliding Mez one-touched for a point blank goal.

The Hornets took 20 shots in the contest as their midfield play kept the pressure on the Sunbirds. More than half of those shots were on goal (11) and the offense forced eight corner kicks.

Paul Islas scored the lone Sunbird goal.

Sacramento State men's soccer will begin the regular season at the Duke Nike Tournament next weekend with games against N.C. State and the host Blue Devils.
