CARRANZA SCORES TWO MORE GOALS AS MEN'S SOCCER MOVES TO 4-0 IN CONFERENCE WITH 3-1 VICTORY AT CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD

10/25/2009

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Junior Ernesto Carranza scored his third and fourth goals of the conference season, and freshman David Norton added his fourth goal of the season, as the Sacramento State men's soccer team defeated the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners by a score of 3-1 on Sunday, Oct. 25.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 8-5-1 overall, and a perfect 4-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Roadrunners fell to 6-6-2, 1-3 inside the MPSF.

It didn't take long for the Hornets to score the match's first goal, as after senior Scott Crandall was tackled inside of the box, Sacramento State was awarded a penalty kick just 1:37 into the match. Carranza scored the conversion, his first PK of the season, giving the Hornets a 1-0 advantage. With the goal, Carranza improved his career penalty kick record to a perfect 4-for-4.

Insurance came near the end of the half, as in the 42nd minute, junior Fernando Cabadas took a corner kick and found Norton, who headed it into the back of the net to give the Hornets a 2-0 advantage, with Cabadas earning his sixth assist of the season.

The Hornets weren't done, however, as in the 43rd minute Cabadas was taken down just outside of the box, and the Hornets were awarded a free kick from 20 yards out. Carranza was called upon once again, and this time sent the direct free kick into the goal for his second score of the game, giving the Hornets a 3-0 halftime advantage.

The Roadrunners didn't find an answer until the 72nd minute, when Joe Polifroni scored on a header off of a cross from Ken Taylor and a flick from Jesus Sanchez, cutting the Hornet advantage to 3-1.

Cal State Bakersfield came close to cutting the deficit to one in the 80th minute, but Alberto Navarro's header was deflected out of the goal area by a Hornet defender, and Sacramento State took home their fourth consecutive MPSF victory.

The Hornets held a 12-7 advantage in shots for the match, putting eight shots on frame to the Roadrunners five.

Carranza lead the way for the Hornets with four shots, including three on goal, while freshman Max Alvarez added three shots, two of which were on frame. Sophomore Bryan Oliver collected his fourth win of the season, while posting three saves in goal for the Hornets.

Cal State Bakersfield was led by Matt Shaxton who collected three shots, while Navarro posted two on the match. Eric Shannon made five saves in goal.

The Hornets return to action on Friday, October 30 as they host the New Mexico Lobos in MPSF action from Hornet Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., and will be the second match of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team, who kickoff at 1 p.m.
