MEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN CAUSEWAY CLASH, 1-0

9/27/2009

DAVIS, Calif. - The Sacramento State men's soccer team fell to the UC Davis Aggies by a score of 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 27.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 4-4-1, while the Aggies improved to 3-6-0 on the season.

After UC Davis held the Hornets shotless in the first half of play, Sacramento State could not capitalize on four early scoring chances in the second half.

Freshman Max Alvarez posted the Hornets first two chances, having one blocked and one saved by Aggie 'keeper Ryan McCowan. Junior Ernesto Carranza then had a chance go wide, and fellow junior Fernando Cabadas pushed an opportunity high in the 54th minute.

UC Davis then responded with a goal in the 55th minute, as Chris Leer sent a cross in the box that was punched home by John Joslin, giving the Aggies the 1-0 advantage.

Joslin then was removed from the match due to a red card just two minutes later, giving the Hornets a man advantage for the remaining 33 minutes of the match.

The Hornets continued a second half onslaught of shots, but were unable to find the back of the net. UC Davis had two more red cards come out, one on their bench in the 65th minute and one on Riley Newport in the 81st minute, giving the Hornets a two-man advantage over the final few minutes, which they were unable to take advantage of.

In all, the Hornets took 15 shots in the second half, outshooting the Aggies for the match 15-11, but UC Davis held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Alvarez led the Hornets with six shots, including both of the Hornets shots on goal. Cabadas and Carranza each took three shots, while senior Scott Crandall added two attempts. Senior Ryan Kenny collected three saves in 90 minutes in net for the Hornets.

The Hornets return to action on Thursday, Oct. 8 when travel to San Jose State for a non-conference matchup with the Spartans. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The two teams will square off in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Nov. 7 at Hornet Soccer Field, in the final regular season contest before the MPSF tournament.
