MEN'S SOCCER OPENS EXHIBITION SEASON WITH 5-0 VICTORY OVER HOLY NAMES

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Behind a 35 shot, 16 shot on goal performance, the Sacramento State men's soccer team defeated the Holy Names Hawks by a score of 5-0 in an exhibition game played Saturday, August 22 at Hornet Soccer Field.

The Hornets opened the scoring in the 14th minute, as senior Scott Crandall sent a through ball that found the foot of junior playmaker Fernando Cabadas. Cabadas sent a cross to sophomore Matt Foy, who feed a pass to sophomore Matthew Tellez, who slotted it into the back of the net to give Sacramento State a 1-0 lead.

Sacramento State dominated the first half of play, outshooting the Hawks 16-1, while putting seven shots on goal.

The second half of play saw the Hornets put the game out of reach with four goals. Cabadas extended the lead 2-0 to start the second half, as in the 59th minute he took a lead feed from junior Manuel Verduzco and blasted it into the back of the net from ten yards out. Verduzco then got on the scoreboard with a goal of his own in the 68th minute, as junior Ernesto Carranza fed a cross to his right foot for a goal and a 3-0 Hornet advantage.

The lead increased to 4-0 in the 77th minute, as senior Jason Duvall was the receipant of some crisp passing by Tellez and freshman Max Alvarez to find the back of the net. The final tally came in the 83rd minute, as Foy set up Alvarez with a lead pass inside the box, which was hammered home for the final margin of 5-0.

The Hornets took 19 shots in the second half, putting nine of those chances on goal.

Senior tri-captain Ryan Kenny picked up the clean sheet in goal, making two saves on four shots faced. Counterpart Lars Johansen was faced with a barrage of shots, collecting 11 saves for the Hawks.

Alvarez led all Hornet attackers with nine shots, including four on goal, while Tellez posted seven shots and senior Scott Crandall and sophomore tri-captain Adam Bettencourt added four apiece. Mustafa Celik led the Hawks with three shots, putting one on goal.

The Hornets conclude exhibition play with a contest against Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday, August 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. from Hornet Soccer Field.
