FOY'S GOLDEN GOAL GIVES MEN'S SOCCER 1-0 VICTORY OVER UNLV IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men's soccer team celebrated senior day before Sunday's match with UNLV, but it was a freshman who provided the theatrics, as Matt Foy scored a golden goal in the 104th minute to give the Hornets a 1-0 conference victory in double overtime.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 8-8-2, 3-6-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play, while the Rebels fall to 8-7-1, 3-5-0 in the MPSF.

The Rebels controlled much of the first half, outshooting the Hornets 11-4 in the opening 45 minutes, but Sacramento State who had the best scoring chance of the half. In the 18th minute, sophomore Fernando Cabadas banged a shot from 18 yards out off the crossbar, leaving the score at 0-0.

In the second half, the Hornets once again had a strong scoring opportunity, as Blake Nunes had an open shot on net in the 54th minute that was headed out by a Rebel defender for a team save. The teams remained scoreless heading into overtime, where the clubs would each engage in their second overtime contest of the weekend.

In the first 10 minutes of extra soccer, both teams posted two shots, with UNLV putting both shots on frame, but again neither team could capitalize.

Foy entered the contest to start the second overtime, having not been on the field at all during the previous 100 minutes of play. His time to shine came in the 104th minute after the Hornets won the ball at midfield, and senior Omar Martinez took control of the ball. Martinez, the team's leader in assists entering the matchup, slotted a perfect through ball that was tracked down by Foy, who shot the ball in one motion underneath a sliding Hawk Mummey for his second goal of the season and first career golden goal.

For the match, the Rebels outshot the Hornets 18-14, with UNLV's Lamar Neagle leading all players with eight shots, including three on goal. Both 'keepers played well, as Hornet freshman Bryan Oliver collected his five clean sheet of the season, making a career-high nine saves, while Mummey made two impressive punch saves, as well as several key collections of Hornet crosses.

The Hornets honored six seniors before the match, with each appearing in the starting lineup: P.J. Egloria, Martinez, Blake Nunes, Brady Nunes, Adam Owens and Josh Zimbrich.

Sacramento State closes out the 2008 season at San Jose State on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. A victory in that match would give the Hornets their first winning record since 2005.
