MEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN DOUBLE OVERTIME TO NEW MEXICO, 2-1

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men's soccer team fell to the New Mexico Lobos by a score of 2-1 in double overtime on Friday, Nov. 7 at Hornet Soccer Field.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 7-8-2 on the season, 2-6-0 in the MPSF, while the Lobos improved to 9-5-2, 5-2-0 in MPSF play.

The Hornets opened the scoring in the 18th minute, as senior Josh Zimbrich produced a cross from the near post that deflected off of a defender onto the awaiting foot of sophomore Ernesto Carranza, who found the back of the net for his second goal of the season, giving Sacramento State a 1-0 lead.

In the first half, Sacramento State outshot the Lobos 11-2, with the Hornets putting seven shots on goal.

The second half of play belonged to New Mexico, as they outshot the Hornets 11-0. The Lobos tied the score at 1-1 in the 58th minute, as Simon Ejdemyr scored on a penalty kick, his third PK conversion of the season.

The match remained tied after the first 90 minutes, moving the match into overtime. In the first overtime, Zimbrich juggled a ball he one at midfield, split three defenders before hitting a shot just wide of the mark in the 98th minute. New Mexico ended the match in the second overtime, as in the 104th minute, Justin Davis found the back of the net on a deep shot from 18 yards out off a feed from Chris Wright, giving the Lobos a 2-1 victory.

For the match the Lobos outshot the Hornets 18-14, with both teams posting seven shots on goal. Senior Blake Nunes and freshman Matthew Tellez led the Hornets with four shots apiece, while Wright and Michael Green led the Lobos with four shots each.

The Hornets return to action on Sunday, Nov. 9 as they host the UNLV Rebels in their home finale. Before the match, the Hornets will honor six seniors, P.J. EgloriaOmar MartinezBlake NunesBrady NunesAdam Owens, and Josh Zimbrich. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
