MEN'S SOCCER DOWNED BY NO. 22 NEW MEXICO 1-0

10/14/2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men's soccer team fell to the No. 22 ranked New Mexico Lobos, 1-0, on Sunday, Oct. 14 at Hornet Soccer Field.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 2-9-1, 1-2-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Lobos improve to 8-3-1, 3-0-1 in MPSF play.

The Hornets showed determination from the opening kickoff onward against their nationally ranked foes, engaging in a physical battle with New Mexico. Sacramento State made a promising start, as sophomore David von Stockhausen, making his first start of the season, was able to put a header on goal in the sixth minute that was saved by Lobo 'keeper Mike Graczyk.

New Mexico then connected on the game's best scoring opportunity in the 10th minute, as Chris Wright crossed a pass perfectly to David Gualdarama, who volleyed it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season, giving the Lobos a 1-0 advantage.

The Hornets best opportunity came in the 38th minute, as freshman Fernando Cabadas took a shot from 25 yards out that took all 6'1" of Graczyk to save with a one-hand punch over the goal.

Both teams traded near-miss scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the contest, as both backlines did exceptional work clearing away many promising crosses and through balls.

Diego Barrera led the Lobos with three shots, while Cabadas posted three shots, including one on goal to lead the Hornets. Both 'keepers, Graczyk and Hornet sophomore Ryan Kenny, posted two saves. The teams ended the match tied with eight shots apiece.

Sacramento State heads to the state of Colorado next weekend for a pair of MPSF matchups. The Hornets will take on Denver on Friday, Oct 19 at 4 p.m. Pacific time, before facing Air Force on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. PT.
