MEN'S SOCCER DROPS 2-1 DECISION TO OREGON STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men's soccer team fell in the final game of the Copa de Causeway to the Oregon State Beavers by a final score of 2-1 on Sun. Sept 9 at Hornet Soccer Field.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 0-4-0 on the season, while the Beavers improve to 2-2-0.
Oregon State controlled the action in the first half of play, outshooting the Hornets 13-0. They lit up the scoreboard in the 18th-minute as Chris Miller found the back of the net off of a corner set piece that was assisted by Brett Gardner and Daniel Leach and made the score 1-0.
The Beavers found the back of the net again three minutes into the second half, as Nick Webb connected on his second goal of the season to give Oregon State a 2-0 advantage.
Sacramento State came firing back to pull to within one as freshman Ernesto Carranza connected on a penalty kick in the 74th-minute that was drawn by a Beaver defender pulling down Carranza in the 18-yard box.
But the Hornets could not find the game-tying goal in the final 16 minutes of play, and the game ended with the Beavers on top 2-1.
For the game, Oregon State outshot the Hornets 15-9, but Sacramento State outshot the Beavers in the second half by a mark of 9-2. In goal, Hornet sophomore Ryan Kenny made five saves, while his counterpart from OSU, Packy Denihan made 2.
In the other Copa de Causeway game of the day, UC Davis and Portland ended in a 3-3 tie, which gave both teams an undefeated 1-0-1 mark in the tournament. The Aggies were awarded the title via tiebreaker, as they scored six goals on the weekend to the Pilots five.
Two Hornets were named to the all-Copa de Causeway team, as freshmen Fernando Cabadas and Alex DeTorres earned the honors.
Sacramento State embarks on a Southern California road trip this coming week as they take on foes from the Big West Conference UC Irvine and UC Riverside. The Hornets will take on the Anteaters at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14 and will face the Highlanders on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
