MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO PORTLAND

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State men’s soccer team fell to the Portland Pilots by a final score of 2-0 on Friday, Sept. 7 at Hornet Soccer Field in game one of the Copa de Causeway.
With the loss the Hornets fall to 0-3-0 on the season while the Pilots improve to 2-1-0.
Sacramento State came out of the gates firing, recording four shots, including three on goal, in the first 9:01 of the contest. During this time the Hornets had two scoring opportunities slip by. Freshman Ernesto Carranza had a clear shot from 10 yards out stopped by Pilot ‘keeper Austin Guerrero in the sixth minute, and then, in the 10th-minute, senior Eli Millan attempted a shot off a beautiful pass from fellow senior Brandon Baggett that also resulted in a tremendous save by Guerrero.
The Hornets had the momentum of the half, outshooting the Pilots 7-1 until Alex Elliot from the back of the net for his second goal of the season in the 40th-minute to give Portland a 1-0 halftime advantage.
The Pilots extended the advantage to 2-0 in the 73rd-minute as Ryan Luke connected on his second goal of the season, giving Portland the 2-0 non-conference triumph.
Portland outshot the Hornets 10-9, with both teams putting five attempts on goal.
Sacramento State closes out Copa de Causeway action on Sunday, Sept. 9 as they host Oregon State in game one of a doubleheader with the women’s soccer team. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
