SAN JOSE, Calif. - Seniors Ryan Rhoads and Oscar Sandoval each scored to lead Sacramento State to a 3-0 shutout over San Jose State on Friday night at Spartan Stadium in both teams’ season finales.
With the victory, the Hornets improved to 7-10-2, ending their season on a four-match unbeaten streak. The team also finished third (behind 21st-ranked Denver and 15th-ranked New Mexico) in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings with a league record of 4-4-2.
It was a fitting end for Rhoads, who ended his career as the team’s leading goal scorer this season with eight strikes, matching the fourth-year senior’s career high. The Modesto, Calif., native ended his career on a three-match scoring streak, with his 21 career goals ranking second in program history and his 51 career points also second all-time.
After playing a scoreless first half, it was Rhoads who broke into the scoring column in the 63rd minute. For the third consecutive match it was junior midfielder Kurtis Lindsey providing the assist, with a quick give-and-go in the box that resulted in Rhoads’ shot to the near post.
In the 74th minute it was Sandoval’s turn. The all-MPSF forward from a year ago, scored his sixth goal of the season heading in Josh Zimbrich’s cross to the near post. It was Sandoval’s 14th career goal in just two seasons at Sacramento State. He finishes his career with 14 goals, four assists and 32 points.
The Hornets added their third score by way of an own goal in the 80th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Kenny preserved the shutout, making six saves during the match.
Seniors Eliot Ricks-Chambers, Ismael Echverría, Pedro Lupercio and three-time all-conference defender Utodi Madu were also playing their final game in a Hornet uniform.
