MEN'S SOCCER DROPS MPSF OPENER TO SAN JOSE STATE 1-0

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Nelson Diaz’s goal in the 21st minute was the lone score in San Jose State’s 1-0 win over Sacramento State, Sunday night at Spartan Stadium.

The match was the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both team’s, with the Hornets falling to 5-3-2 overall and 0-1-0 in conference. The Spartans are 5-3-1 and 1-0-0 in the MPSF.

Diaz’s goal came on a through ball from Dan Oka that beat Hornet goalkeeper Matt McDougall to the far post.

The Hornets were outshot 20-11 in the match with senior Ricky Rodriguez and junior Ryan Rhoads recording one shot on goal apiece. Sacramento State did have a 5-2 corner kick advantage. It was only the second time this year that the Hornets have been shutout in a mtach.

Six players were issued yellow cards during the game and Spartan goalkeeper Richard Mann made one save. Diaz led all players with six shots and his goal was his fourth of the year.

Sacramento State will continue to play its MPSF schedule on the road at No. 1 ranked New Mexico on Friday, Oct. 14 and UNLV on Sunday, Oct. 16. The Hornets next home game is at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 against Denver.
