LUPERCIO AND SANDOVAL RECORD FIRST GOALS OF SEASON IN 2-1 VICTORY OVER OREGON STATE
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Pedro Lupercio picked an opportune time to score the first goal of his collegiate career. His strike in the 84th minute proved to be the game-winner in Sacramento State’s 2-1 victory over Oregon State on Monday afternoon at Hornet Field.Lupercio, a Dixon, Calif., native, started the play on the left side of midfield with a quick pass to junior forward Ryan Rhoads. Lupercio then started toward goal and Rhoads served in the assist as Lupercio struck his shot in the upper corner past Oregon State goalkeeper Jason Mariner.
The Hornets are now 1-1-0 on the season and pick up their first win over a Pac-10 team since 1999.
The Beavers fall to 0-2-1.
Newcomer Oscar Sandoval from Littlerock, Calif., scored a highlight-reel goal in the 18th minute to give the Hornets an initial 1-0 advantage. After a cross from freshman Josh Zimbrich was headed to the top of the penalty box by an Oregon State defender, Sandoval with his back to goal, pulled off a bicycle kick, striking the ball into the corner of the net for his first goal as a Hornet.
Sacramento State was close to taking a 2-0 lead late in the first half when a header from junior Eliot Ricks-Chambers was called back on an offside. Minutes later the Beavers recorded the equalizer in the 43rd minute when Collin Foster’s shot was deflected into the Hornets’ goal off a Sacramento State defender.
The match was evenly played with Oregon State taking six shots on frame compared to Sacramento State’s five. Rhoads and Lupercio led Sacramento state with two shots on goal apiece, while Foster recorded two for the Beavers. The Hornet defense was comprised of freshman Jeff Buddenbohn and junior Utodi Madu in the central defense, while junior Eric Ortiz and freshman Jack Jones got the start as the team’s outside backs.
Freshman goalkeeper Andrew Gangnuss came into the match in the 56th minute after senior goalkeeper Matt McDougall was collided with in the box. Gangnuss made a match-high four saves in the last 35 minutes.
Sacramento State returns to Hornet Field for a 4 p.m. match with Dayton on Friday.
