ORTIZ AND VON STOCKHAUSEN SCORE IN MEN’S SOCCER 2-1 VICTORY OVER WARRIORS

8/21/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -  David von Stockhausen’s goal in the 74th minute proved to be the game-winner in Sacramento State’s 2-1 victory over Cal State Stanislaus in an exhibition game on Sunday afternoon.

It was freshman central midfielder David Lopez who found von Stockhausen wide on the right, feeding him a pass in stride. Both in their first appearances with the Hornets, von Stockhausen struck the ball into a wide open net over the head of onrushing Cal State Stanislaus goalkeeper Andrew Arellano.

Sacramento State scored its first goal in the 31st minute when, starting forward junior Eric Ortiz volleyed a cross from junior Eliot Ricks-Chambers into the net and past Arellano.

Cal State Stanislaus got on the board in the 82nd minute when Jonathan Domingos slotted a penalty kick past Hornet goalkeeper Andrew Gangnuss.

Sacramento State got a lot of time from its new freshmen class with defender Jeff Buddenbohn and midfielders Josh Zimbrich and Jack Jones seeing time in addition to von Stockhausen and Lopez. The Hornets out shot Cal State Stanislaus 10 -9, with four of the Hornets’ chances coming on goal and three for the Warriors.

Ortiz led Sacramento State with two shots on frame, including a breakaway in the second half that was stopped by Arellano. Sophomore Lucio Orellana was also dangerous off the bench with three shots and one coming on goal. In his debut, Buddenbohn a 6-4 defender out of St. Francis HS in La Cañada, Calif., teamed with junior Utodi Madu in the central defense and proved to be dangerous on set pieces with two headers.

Gangnuss came on at the start of the second half for senior goalkeeper Matt McDougall. Each keeper recorded a save apiece.

Sacramento State has one more exhibition against Notre Dame de Namur at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 at Hornet Field. The Hornets start their season at Saint Mary’s on Thursday, Sept. 1, before returning to Hornet Field for the home opener against Oregon State on Monday, Sept. 5.
