MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS UNLV 2-1 WITH MILLAN'S 35-YARD GOLDEN GOAL

10/6/2006

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – With time running out, Sacramento State’s Eli Millan scored the second golden goal of his career in the 109th minute, leading Sacramento State to a 2-1 victory over UNLV on Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

Usually known for his creativity close to goal, the North Highlands, Calif., native hit from long distance with a 35-yard shot the upper left corner.

The Hornets, now 4-7-0 overall and 1-1-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action, fought back from a one-goal deficit in the second half.

With less than six minutes left in regulation, senior Oscar Sandoval struck a bicycle kick to the upper right corner, beating UNLV goalkeeper Calvin Bailey, and sending the match into overtime.

Sacramento State found itself trailing UNLV, 1-0, after the 61st minute when the Rebels’ Lamar Neagle beat Hornet goalkeeper Andrew Gangnuss with a 25-yard blast over his reach.

The Rebels are now 0-9-2 in 2006 and 0-3-0 in the MPSF.

It wasn’t the first time Sandoval has used a bit of flair to reach the back of the net. The second team all-MPSF honoree scored on a bicycle kick during a 2-1 victory over Oregon State in 2005 and now has 10 career goals to his credit.

Millan’s now has nine career goals, including four game winners and three knocks this season.

The Hornets next head to Albuquerque to play 17th-ranked and two-time defending MPSF champion New Mexico. The match can be followed on gametracker or watched on Lobos All Access at golobos.com
