MEN’S SOCCER OPENS CONFERENCE WITH 1-0 LOSS TO SAN JOSE STATE

10/1/2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Colby Moore’s goal in the 19th minute proved to be the deciding factor in San Jose State’s 1-0 victory over Sacramento State in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both teams in front of a season-high 972 fans at Hornet Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.

After Hornet sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Gangnuss made a one-handed stop to deny Moore in the 13th minute, Moore responded less than six minutes later with a one-time volley to the near post. Ed Brand played a ball out of the back that was settled and flicked toward goal by Gavin Wenyon, finding an open Moore just five yards in front of Gangnuss’ net.

San Jose State improves to 4-4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the MPSF, while the Hornets fall to 3-7 and 0-1 in the MPSF.

Sacramento State had its chances to score the equalizer. In the first half, sophomore David Lopez unleashed a low-driven shot to the left post that forced Spartan goalkeeper Richard Mann to make a diving save.

In the second half, freshman Zlatan Kuckovic’s header just cleared the crossbar, while Lopez again produced a dangerous chance with a volley that went wide of the post. With less than a minute left in regulation, senior Oscar Sandoval had a header toward the near post that was denied by Mann.

Sacramento State will now travel to UNLV on Friday, Oct.6 for its next MPSF match.
