MEN'S SOCCER SURRENDERS TWO LATE GOALS IN LOSS TO NO. 20 CAL
BERKELEY, Calif. – Sacramento State surrendered two second-half goals to 20th-ranked Cal in a 2-0 loss to the Bears on Sunday afternoon at the adidas Cal Legacy Classic.The Bears, who improve to 5-2-1 on the year, were crowned Legacy Classic champions after going undefeated with a 2-1 victory over Dartmouth on Friday.
Sacramento State falls to 2-6 on the season.
Javier Ayala-Hil gave the Bears a one-goal lead in the 57th minute, dribbling past two Hornet defenders near the top of the box and burying his shot to the far post past diving goalkeeper Andrew Gangnuss.
Sacramento State''s most dangerous scoring oppurtunity came in the 67th minute on a corner, as forward Eliot Ricks-Chambers, the team''s current leading scorer, headed the corner just over the Cal crossbar.
In the 79th minute, a Hornet foul in the box led to Cal’s second goal. The Bears’ Luke Sassano was taken down leading to a penalty kick from Nick Hatzke.
Sacramento State took six shots during the match with Ricks-Chambers, Zlatan Kuckovic, Jack Jones, Kurtis Lindsey, Zach Tuss and Oscar Sandoval all recording one shot apiece.
Sophomore defenders Adam Owens and Zach Tuss, both local products out of Jesuit High School and Natomas High School, respectively, were named to the all-tournament team.
The Hornets play Pacific Union at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24 at Hornet Field in their final tune-up before the team’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener against San Jose State at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1.
