RHOADS NETS FIRST GOAL OF SEASON, BUT MEN'S SOCCER FALLS SHORT IN 2-1 LOSS TO OREGON STATE

8/27/2006

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sacramento State suffered a second straight one-goal loss on Saturday night, falling 2-1 to Oregon State at the Diadora Classic in Corvallis, Ore.

With the victory, the Beavers went an undefeated 2-0 at the tournament to nab first place, while the Hornets open their season 0-2.

Oregon State forward Nick Webb came off the bench and was responsible for both Beaver goals.

Webb struck for the first time just five minutes before the end of the first half, reaching the end of Daniel Leach’s chip into the box and putting the Beavers on the scoreboard with a sliding effort.

The Hornets also had their chances in the first half when Sacramento State forward Oscar Sandoval headed in Kurtis Lindsey’s cross to the left post, but Sandoval was ruled offside, thus nullifying the would be go-ahead goal in the fourth minute.

With under a minute to go in the first half, Oregon State goalkeeper Packy Deeniihan parried away a blast from Hornet midfielder Andrew Tamm to secure the Beavers one-goal halftime lead.

The match was fairly even, with each team taking seven shots apiece and the Beavers having just a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Webb then scored the Beavers’ second goal in the 74th, combining with his brother, Mason Webb, for his second strike.

In the 86th minute, senior Ryan Rhoads took a pass from Tamm and put Sacramento State back in the match with a scorching 25-yard shot in the upper left corner of the net. It was the Modesto, Calif., native’s 14th goal of his career.

The Hornets’ hope for a second goal took a hit when Jack Jones was red carded just 30 seconds after the goal was scored.

Sacramento State will play it next match a little closer to home, crossing the Causeway to play at UC Davis on Thursday. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 5 p.m. and is part of the Copa de Causeway. The Hornets will then host Valparaiso at 12 p.m., on Monday Sept. 4, in the second game of the tournament.
