MICHIGAN STATE SCORES GAME WINNER IN OVERTIME TO SPOIL MEN'S SOCCER SEASON OPENER
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Michigan State spoiled Sacramento State’s season opener with a 1-0 victory in overtime at the Diadora Classic in Corvallis, Ore.Zac Scaffidi reached the end of Ben Pirmann’s cross from the right side, one-timing the game winner past Hornet goalkeeper Ryan Kenny in the 97th minute.
Kenny, a freshman playing in his first match for Sacramento State, had a busy day in between the posts making a match-high nine saves, while his defense cleared three Spartan shots off the line.
Michigan State had a sizeable shot advantage, 18-4, but the Hornets took an advantage in the 56th minute when Josh Rogers was red carded off the field. The one-man advantage was short-lived when Sacramento State freshman Zlatan Kuckovic was sent off in the 60th minute.
Ryan Rhoads and Oscar Sandoval each recorded shots on goal for the Hornets. Sacramento State also had a shot cleared off Michigan State’s goal line in the second half.
Sacramento State will return to Paul Lorenz Field tomorrow night, playing host Oregon State at 7 p.m. in its final match of the tournament.
