SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men’s soccer team scored two goals in the first half and held off UNLV in the second period for a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. The win improves the Hornets’ record to 4-7-1 overall and 3-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, after the first round of conference competition.Sacramento State now has won three of its last four matches and remains undefeated at Hornet Soccer Field, with a record of 4-0-1.
The Hornets wasted little time finding the back of the net, when sophomore forward Ryan Rhoads scored his team-high fourth goal of the season in the third minute of the match. The Modesto, Calif., native made a runinto the penalty box and received a through pass from junior midfielder Andrew Tamm. Rhoads then struck the ball low to the far post, past diving UNLV goalkeeper Peter Clitheroe. Rhoads now has eight points in 2004 and four goals in as many games. For Tamm, he now has two goals and one assist on the season.
With less then five seconds left in the first half, the Hornets struck again, when Ricky Rodriguez sent a pass to sophomore forward Eli Millan. Millan, a graduate of Foothill HS, was able to run on to the pass and strike the ball past Clitheroe, to give Sacramento State the 2-0 lead. For Millan, it was his third goal of he season and second in which he scored in the final minute of a half. Rodriguez’s assist was his fourth of the season, it was also his second-straight game with tallying an assist. Of the Hornets’ last eight goals scored, Rodriguez has either scored or tallied an assist in six of the goals. Rodriguez is now tied with Rhoads for the team-lead in points with eight.
In the second half the Rebels stepped of their offensive attack, forcing Hornet goalkeeper Matt McDougall to make five saves during the final 45 minutes. He finished the match with a game-high eight saves.
The Rebels (4-8-0, 3-3) avoided the shutout in the 57th minute, when Rod Dyachenko scored his third goal of the season. He found his way to the end of a Deshawn Woolery cross and volleyed a shot passed McDougall.
UNLV played the final 60 minutes of the match with 10 players after Clitheroe was issued a red card in the 60th minute. Senior forward Patrick Nelle broke in behind the defense and Clitheroe came out of the box. Clitheroe played Nelle’s shot with his hand outside the box and was ejected from the game. He was replaced by Matt Johnson who recorded one save in the final 30 minutes, Clitheroe had two.
The Rebels were led by Boomer Arbelaez, who finished the match with three shots on goal. The Hornets had only five shots on frame to the Rebels’ nine, but finished the opportunities they did have. Nelle and Rhoads both recorded two shots on goal apiece.
Sacramento State’s defense was led once again by junior defensive midfielder Marco Ramirez, seniors Marcos Mercado and Juan Carlos Cortez, Jr., and sophomores Ismael EcheverÃa and Utodi Madu.
Sacramento State will continue its homestand on Friday, Oct. 22 for a 4 p.m. match with Denver. The Hornets will finish the weekend with a 1 p.m. match with Air Force on Sunday, Oct. 24.
